Gettysburg Equestrian Historical Society
Annual Trail Rides

2008 Dates: Saturday, September 6 and Sunday, October 5.

Place: Artillery Ridge Campground, 610 Taneytown Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325
Time: Check-in by 9am; ready to ride by 10am.
Download forms at: http://thegehs.org/trailrideschedule.html

The Gettysburg Equestrian Historical Society (GEHS) holds its annual trail rides to help support the equestrian trails at the Gettysburg Battlefield Military Park. Come join the fun and learn about Gettysburg’s history in the Civil War through the knowledge of our licensed battlefield tour guide. Our guide will inform you abut the battles that occurred throughout the 3-day siege, including Little Round Top and Picket’s Charge. The rides are 3-1/2 to 4 hours long during which you will be riding over the 2nd and 3rd day’s battle. There will be a short break at the half way point of your ride where you can dismount, stretch your legs, and water your horse. Drinks and a snack will be provided by the club.

You must have your own horse (we don't supply them) and we strongly recommend it wear shoes or protective boots.  The trails have a gravel base with rocky areas; riding on the grass is prohibited and subject to citation by the park rangers. We ride around traffic (tour buses, motorcycles, etc.); please make sure your horse is comfortable with the sights, smells, and noises it may encounter. It must also be comfortable standing still in a group while we are stopped when the guide is talking.

The registration fee of each ride is $35.00, which covers the guided ride and lunch when the ride is over. Please mail your entries in ASAP as there is a limit of 25 riders per the National Park Service rules. You will not be considered registered until the form and payment are received. Please include your negative Coggins or present before unloading your horse(s).

The American Museum of Natural History
announces their new exhibit:

(click on picture for more details!)

May 17, 2008—January 4, 2009

The Horse will examine the powerful and continuing relationship between the horse and humans. The exhibition will explore the origins of the horse family, extending back over more than 50 million years; examine early interactions between horses and humans that led to horse domestication; and see how horses have, over time, changed warfare, trade, transportation, agriculture, sports, and many other facets of human life.
The Horse showcases spectacular fossils and cultural objects from around the world—including many from the Museum's extraordinary collections. This exhibition will include videos, computer interactives,  hands-on activities, and touchable casts.
